Language Note 1 - Buying Something in the US

When you're ready to pay for your groceries in the supermarket or if you're buying in a store, you'll be the one SWIPING your card. You'll be first prompted to instructions in English or Spanish. Choose whatever you feel more confident. You need to add your pin number (your password) if you're using a debit card. If it's credit, either the cashier will give the receipt for you to sign or you'll have a screen in front of you to add your digital signature.

Sometimes, the cashiers will SWIPE(slide)  the card and they might come with an unexpected question for foreigners:

"What's your ZIP CODE?"

If you're just a tourist and not a resident in the US, just say you don't live in the US.

Another common question is "need some cash back?" or "any cash back?", if the machine hasn't already asked that while you're going through the steps after swiping your card. You can cash some money in department stores, supermarkets, and post office, for example, with the limit of $25 to $50 depending on the store policy.

Oh, just one more unexpected question: "do you want the receipt in your bag?"

Questions or comments? Feel free to write. I'd love to keep interacting with you.

Well, Celso, teaching, learning are my passion! I'm glad I'm in the right track and hope to bring useful information that you won't see in textbooks, things that are part of the everyday life here that learners have a hard time trying to figure out what someone is saying or what is culturally appropriate in certain circumstances. If you have any other suggestions of topics, I'd love to know. I bet now Canada is much more pleasant in summertime, isn't it?

Dear Carla,

You are so fast to answer the posts. I receive the answer immediately it's incridible!
Really the summer is great in canada, you can't recognize the country, there are so much sunny days and it's very very hot, full of flowers, green trees and so many cultural and sprotifs activities. It's amazing, I'm enjoying so much this great experience mainly because I reached (-) 18 degrees here in march.
By the way I started the english lessons three weeks ago. I hope to improve my english as my french as have been improving.
I haven't been receiving answer from Dennis in your discussing about study abroad. Is he good?

See you,

Celso Arrais - for a while in Montreal

Valéria,

I'm really glad you liked it. So, stay tuned! I plan to give lots of insightful cultural and language notes, something that you might find valuable as an English learner.

I loved our chat at Banco do Brasil with Balduíno, and we'll certainly get-together for some more fun talk!

@ Celso. I was fast replying to you because I was online when you were writing. You were working late at night, huh?

Great that you're still having a wonderful learning journey in Canada. Please, keep reporting it at http://listeningplus.ning.com

Dennis Oliver is doing fine, probably he was busy with some other projects. We now have a book club project going on.

Regards from Boston.

Dear Carla,
I'm glad to interage with you again. It's a great chance to learn English in a easy way. This article about how to deal with credit and debit card abroad is very useful. I have a good experience with it and this article describes exactly what happen with us when we are shopping. You also can cash some money with your debit card in any ATM.
See you,
Eber

Carla,

I'll keep reporting my journey in canada at ning. I was worried about Dennis because he didn't answer the last post since two months ago. What a pity you couldn't go to Montreal Jazz Festivals, I went to see Gilberto Gil show and some international singers. It was pretty good! inthe end of jully start the francopholie festival but it's only french singers.
Have a nice stay in Boston, see you,

Celso Arrais

@ Eber Nice to keep the interaction going on here. I'm glad to be connected with you all in a useful way. Great reminder about the ATM machines that you can cash money there. The good thing is that the procedure is very similar to what I mentioned in the blog post. At the end, they will ask: Do you want to print a receipt? You can choose to do it or not.

@ Celso You know I love to hear about your learning journey in Canada, don't you? Dennis is fine. So, don't worry. I also think it is a pity I didn't manage to go to the Jazz festival. I think I mentioned it to you. My friend said it's just an incredible musical event.

Carla Yes I do, of course! You have been motivating me a lot since listening course and I know that you vibrate with each conquest of yours students. That's why I admire you so much.
Really the festivals was great but you can enjoy it next year.
I visited Ottawa in the canada's day for 2 days and I'll visit Toronto next week as part of my immersion in english, because the canada english is not bilingual like the canada french, they are really english speaker only, so it's a great experience to pratice english. Ottawa is 160km far from Montreal and Toronto 350km but there are a regular bus/train and the road/rail are great. I'll intend to spend four days in Toronto (2 + 2, in diferents times) and in Ottawa two days more. I'll publish the pictures in the next post on the ning.

See you,

Celso Arrais

Hi Carla,

you are always creating new ways to sharing you knowledge and fostering our learning process. Congratulations for this new idea and for this useful first text.
Unfortunately, I'm not in Brasília to meet you face-to-face because I'm in vacation at my parents' home but I hope we will have another opportunity to get together and exchange ideas.

best regards,

Marcelo Mello
